Interim Director Appointed at UNH Museum of Art

January 28, 2009

The Museum of Art has announced that Weston LaFountain of Portland, Maine, has been appointed interim director of the Museum of Art.

LaFountain brings to the position more than 23 years of experience in education and cultural services with both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. As an independent curator, consultant, and writer, he is well versed in all aspects of exhibition planning, collection management, and program development.

Most recently, LaFountain served as curator/director for two galleries in Portland, Maine, where he was responsible for all facets of gallery management and operations, including exhibition planning, preparation, public relations, and marketing. Previously, he was outreach coordinator at the Portland Museum of Art.

LaFountain has also taught art appreciation and art history courses at the University of New England.

He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art from Wesleyan University, Conn., and a Master of Arts degree in art history from San Francisco State University.

At UNH, LaFountain will be responsible for exhibition planning, collection care and development, program development, and facilities management. He will also serve as a liaison to the museum’s board of advisors, the College of Liberal Arts, and other university constituencies, as well as the general community.

“Mr. LaFountain is an excellent choice. He brings valuable public museum and private sector expertise to the interim director’s position, including a broad range of curatorial and museum outreach experience,” said Michael McConnell, chair of the department of art and art history. “I look forward to working with Mr. LaFountain on the challenges and opportunities facing the museum in the months ahead.”

The Museum of Art is open during the academic year Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 p.m.; closed Fridays and university holidays, including March 13 through March 22, and during exhibition changes.
