UNH Sheds 243,000 Pounds in 10 Weeks
April 29, 2009
UNH beat Harvard and Yale in the Grand Champion Division of the 10-week recycling competition known as Recyclemania.
UNH was 68th in the Grand Champion Division while Harvard came in at 76 and Yale was 145. By week 10, UNH had overall recycled 243,000 pounds of paper, cardboard, glass and aluminum cans.
The friendly waste challenge took place from January 18 to March 28 with more than 200 colleges and universities participating.
During the 10 weeks, ecological advocates, hall directors, and the Student Senate worked diligently to get the word out to the UNH community to recycle more and waste less.
Gnarlz, the UNH mascot, reminded hockey fans to recycle in the Whittemore Arena. The Operating Staff Council conducted a Paper Waste Pilot Study and collected 55 pounds of bulk mail. UNH Dining, Facilities Grounds and Roads, and Waste Management put in extra effort to report weights each week for different targeted materials.
