Talk about worth waiting for.
The Dairy Bar is back in full swing. Reopened last month after undergoing extensive remodeling that includes a waiting room for train passengers, the popular eatery celebrates its grand opening Friday, Sept. 12, with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m.
But you don’t have to wait until then to enjoy the new menu, rich in local and organic food. The Diary Bar is open from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday’s daylong celebration features WERZ radio (107.1) personalities Ralphie and Suzanne, who will broadcast live from noon to 2 p.m. There will also be drawings to win a $25 gift certificate to the Dairy Bar (10 winners will be chosen); a year’s worth of sundaes (four winners); and lunch for four at the renovated restaurant.
Additionally, anyone who donates a new or used book to WERZ for Literacy gets a free ice cream cone.
Here’s a sample of the new menu. Sandwiches range from the Greek Isles, made with local, all-natural chicken and local feta cheese to the Hummus Trolley, packed with organic greens and local tomatoes, to the Choco PB&B—all-natural dark chocolate peanut butter with fresh bananas.
Or, choose from an assortment of salads or salad wraps. Soups are homemade.
For breakfast there are egg sandwiches (vegetarian or meat), fresh fruit cups, granola and organic yogurt and muffins and bagels.
And don’t forget the 14 flavors of ice cream and five flavors of frozen yogurt in addition to sorbet and gelati. Or opt for the baked apple, drizzled with local honey, organic granola, cinnamon and toasted pecans.
In addition to using fresh, local, organic food, the Dairy Bar strives to be sustainable through composting and recycling. Food containers are made of materials that can be composted and the plastic silverware is recyclable. On Friday, staff from UNH Dining will be on hand to talk about the Dairy Bar’s sustainable efforts.
One point to note: in fairness to other Durham restaurants that are open to the public, UNH employees are charged meals tax at the Dairy Bar.
