The chairmen of the PAT, OS and EE Councils met with the USNH Board of Trustees Thursday and presented an overview of each council’s mission and their objectives for the coming year. Sara Cleaves, associate director of the Office of Sustainability, also addressed the trustees, offering an overview of the sustainable initiatives at UNH.
The meeting took place Oct. 23 in the Piscataqua Room in Holloway Commons. President Mark Huddleston and several other university officials were also in attendance. Each system campus has hosted a similar forum for employees and the trustees.
The councils serve in an advisory capacity to the president and report on concerns regarding the rights and responsibilities of their constituents.
Matty Leighton, chairman of the OS Council, led off with a presentation on the various projects the council is working on this year, including researching an upward review performance assessment, creating a mediation board and improving communication with constituents.
PAT Council head Guy Eaton noted his representatives are exploring the idea of a volunteer policy that would allow UNH employees time off to perform community service. He listed parking, benefit differences between faculty and staff and transportation issues as key areas of concern for the council.
UNH Cooperative Extension specialist Julia Peterson is chair of the Extension Educator's Council. She discussed work being done around the state by extension employees and said the council is working on a maternity leave policy that would include fathers and adoptive and foster parents.
Cleaves briefly discussed the Office of Sustainability’s core initiatives: biodiversity, climate education, food and society and culture and sustainability.
A short question and answer period followed each speaker.
On Nov. 5 there will be a tri-council meeting at 1:15 in MUB Theater I with Dick Cannon, vice president of finance and administration, to discuss employee benefits.
