The New England Center recently has been accepted into two sustainable lodging organizations.
The New Hampshire Sustainable Lodging Program through the New Hampshire Lodging and Restaurant Association (NHLRA) and It’s A Green Green World, an international website listing green lodging properties all over the world (www.itsagreengreenworld.com) have both given the nod to the full-service hotel and conference center.
“If we, as part of UNH, approach our operation from a sustainable viewpoint, we help to shift the status quo through action. It takes time to change old methods, but we’re well on our way,” says Shelly Burch, manager of operations at the New England Center.
Some of the initiatives either in place or in progress at the New England Center are energy-efficient lighting; low-flow shower heads, low-flow toilets, and natural landscaping that requires minimum water and chemicals.
Also, the hotel has switched to green cleaning products, uses recycled paperboard room keys, and, with UNH dining, strives to buy and serve food that is local or has traveled the shortest possible distance.
“Being sustainable is very important to UNH. We will do everything in our power to protect it for the future,” says David May, assistant vice president of Business Affairs. “Having the New England Center accepted by the New Hampshire Sustainable Lodging Program and It’s a Green Green World are further examples of our commitment. We are extremely proud of these honors.”
