President Mark Huddleston attended the OS Council’s June meeting to
help answer questions regarding how workers are supervised.
The discussion focused around the ways employees are evaluated and whether
the systems provide a good mechanism for doing so.
“We want to make sure everybody who is in a supervisory position can
be a good supervisor,” Huddleston said. “The question becomes what
is the best way to do that.”
Councilors noted that many employees would like to see a 360-degree evaluation
process implemented that allows employees to provided feedback on their supervisor’s
performance during the annual assessment.
There was also some discussion on how the hiring freeze will impact advancement
opportunities and whether the university will continue to outsource some jobs
such as housekeeping. Sharon Demers, assistant vice president for human resources,
offered to find out more about outsourcing changes.
In other news, the council reviewed a proposed change to the sick pool conversion
policy that would allow for conversion twice a year instead of once. Also,
Ann Boylan from housekeeping became the council’s newest member.
