Deputy Chief of Police Encourages Emergency Alert Registration
By Paul Dean, UNH Deputy Chief of Police and Emergency Operations Coordinator
February 20, 2008
In the wake of the shooting incident at Northern Illinois University, I again
want to urge all of you to register for a free service that automatically sends
to your email account or cell phone a brief text message alerting you to an
emergency situation on the Durham campus. You can register at https://alert.unh.edu
So far, more than 3,100 individuals have registered, but that is only a fraction
of the number of faculty, students and staff who are on our campus each and
every day.
UNH has contracted with Roam Secure, a Virginia-based company that has the
capability to send more than 18,000 messages per minute to anyone who enrolls
in the alert service.
When an emergency occurs, UNH police will send an alert text message to all
who are subscribed, and will follow up on the UNH Web site as the incident
is resolved. After you receive the initial alert on your phone or computer,
you should check the Web site for updates on the situation.
After you register, you will be able to manage your own contact information
in the event you change an email address or cell phone number. You also may
choose to opt out at any time. For example, if you are a student and no longer
wish to receive the alerts after you graduate in May, you will be able to unsubscribe
easily.
The Roam Secure service is intended to become another means of communication
during an emergency, complementing our on-campus email addresses that receive
Directed Communications, the UNH Web site and the recorded information on the
UNH information line, 603-862-0000.
It only takes a few minutes to register at https://alert.unh.edu
