Cornucopia Food Pantry: New Location, Same Need
April 16, 2008

The university’s food pantry, Cornucopia, has moved to the Waysmeet
Center on Mill Road to better serve its clients.
The idea of relocating the food bank from Christensen Hall to Waysmeet has
been under discussion for three or four years, says Larry Brickner-Wood but
it wasn’t until a student at the Thompson School decided to make it her
leadership project that it finally happened.
Varalin Newcomer, who is in the community leadership program, first became
acquainted with Cornucopia last year when she helped with the food baskets
that the food pantry distributes three times a year to members of the university
community.
“We’d still be talking about it if she hadn’t taken this
on,” Brickner-Wood says, chaplain and executive director of United Campus
Ministry.
Moving to the Waysmeet Center means there will always been someone available
who can assist people dropping off or picking up food, something that was a
problem at the other location if a volunteer couldn’t make their shift.
“People are here all the time so we can easily help out if a volunteer
doesn’t show up,” Brickner-Wood says. “We’d know right
away.”
What’s more, as grateful as he was for being able to use it, the space
at Christensen wasn’t particularly user-friendly, Brickner-Wood says,
noting that it wasn’t accessible without a key and entry was through
a loading dock.
“With it here, we’ll also be able to have a better sense of the
food we’re taking in and people will be able to bring it in any time
instead of just the two days when Cornucopia is open,” Brickner-Wood
says. “And we’ll have a better sense of when the shelves are empty.”
Cornucopia is open Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Fridays from noon
to 5 p.m. The Waysmeet Center is located at 15 Mill Road.
