November 7, 2007
The annual Geographical Information System (GIS) Day Conference and College
Fair at UNH will feature a travel, tourism and recreation cartographic exhibition
and a keynote presentation by Tom Patterson, senior cartographer of the U.S.
National Park Service. Patterson will speak about the mapping of Alaska’s
Glacier Bay National Park and how the park is being affected by climate change.
GIS Day 2007 will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at the Institute for the Study
of Earth, Oceans, and Space (EOS) and will feature more than 150 global, regional,
and local maps as well as satellite images of some of the most beautiful sites
around the world.
Visitors will be taken on a cartographic tour of our most spectacular national
parks, monuments and recreation areas, including Yosemite, Yellowstone, Arches,
and Acadia; and they will also be able to view culturally important UNESCO
world heritage sites like Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal, Chichanitsa, and the
Egyptian pyramids via satellite imagery.
In addition to this year's featured exhibition, a professional map and poster
exhibit of cartographic works from up to 100 local and regional geo-spatial
science professionals from planning, education, emergency management, resource
management, science, government and industry will be on display.
A professional geo-spatial science vendor hall and a regional geo-spatial
science college fair will again be part of the event, and the GIS Day store
will feature atlases, globes, compasses, navigational software and GPS units.
Public GIS Day events will be held at the Institute for the Study of Earth,
Oceans, and Space in Morse Hall between noon and 5 p.m. with the keynote presentation
at 12:30. Admission is free for all.
Major funding for this year’s GIS Day 2007 is provided by NASA’s
New Hampshire Space Grant Consortium, the EOS Complex Systems Research Center,
and EOS. Major product contributions for this year’s GIS Day 2007 Cartographic
Exhibition are from the U. S. National Park Service.
