French Honor Society Chapter Kicks Off Fundraising

By Lori Wright, Media Relations

Alexandre Dumas

The UNH chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the French national honor society, plans to honor two 19th century French writers with its spring fundraising efforts.

Each year Pi Delta Phi promotes an awareness and understanding of the contributions made by speakers of French from around the world. This year, UNH students hope to raise $500 to fund a dedicated front-row seat with a commemorative plaque at The Music Hall in Portsmouth honoring French dramatist Alexandre Dumas pere, author of “The Three Musketeers” and “The Count of Monte Cristo,” and New Orleans-born French playwright Victor Sejour. Both writers, whose dramas were highly successful in 19th century Paris, were of black ancestry.

Chapter members will sell raffle tickets now through March 29 for $5 each. The prize drawing will be held March 30. Tickets are available in 210 Murkland Hall from Barbara Armstrong ( 2-3856). Winners need not be present at the drawing, but prizes must be picked up on campus.

This year's grand prize is in-home cooking lessons for two from top chef Chris Williams. A minimum of five tickets must be purchased to be eligible. The second-prize winner will take home tickets for free films at The Music Hall worth $32. A minimum of three tickets must be purchased to be eligible. Other prizes, including signed translations of the works of Dumas and Sejour, French foods and food service items, French bath and beauty items, chocolates and books, require the purchase of one ticket.

Information on the raffle and on Dumas and Sejour is available at http://www.unh.edu/languages/LLC/French/frenchresources/raffle/index.html.
