Guy Eaton will serve as chairman of the PAT Council for another year and Scott
Bugbee will stay on as vice chairman. Kim Walls of UNH Manchester is the new
secretary.
The elections were held during the December meeting where four outgoing representatives
received certificates of appreciation from Megan Davis on behalf of President
Mark Huddleston.
PAT members also signed up to be on one of the council’s four committees:
communication, compensation and benefits, nominations and professional development.
An update of issues being addressed by the SPPC included a brief discussion
on New Hampshire’s new civil union law, which goes into effect in January.
USNH has decided to maintain the status quo until July 1, 2009, to allow time
for a new policy to be considered.
The existing policy allowing university employees to add their domestic same-sex
partners to their benefits plan became effective in February 2000. Heterosexual
domestic partners were excluded at the time in part because of concerns related
to cost. Expanding the policy to include them is one of the issues that will
be discussed during the transition period.
For now, current and new employees with same-sex partners will continue to
receive benefits under the existing provision. A committee will study the policy
to determine what, if any, changes are needed.
In other news it was announced that a day-long joint council orientation will
be held Jan. 9, 2008, at the Alumni Center. The Jan. 2 PAT monthly meeting
has been canceled.
