Passing: Former Cooperative Extension Director Dies
April 11, 2007
Former Cooperative Extension director and professor Maynard C. Heckel
died Sunday, April 8, of liver cancer.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 12 at 2 p.m.
at the Community Church in Durham.
Heckel was director of UNH Cooperative Extension and Professor of Adult
Education from 1971 to 1983. He spent his professional career in Cooperative
Extension, starting as a county agent in Connecticut and later serving
as associate director in Virginia before his selection as New Hampshire's
director.
In 1977 Maynard designed and established the extension educator ranking
system because he saw the need to recognize the educational role of professional
Cooperative Extension agents and specialists in carrying out the outreach
function so important to the mission of a land-grant university.
Heckel and his wife Audrey established the Maynard and Audrey E. Heckel
Extension Educator Fellowship in 2001 to recognize cooperative extension
educators for exemplary program accomplishments. The permanent endowment
will provide a minimum $1,000 award annually.
