In "The
Science of Child Sexual Abuse," an article published in
the April 22 issue of Science magazine, Kathy Becker-Blease,
a UNH Cooperative Extension Family Education and Policy Specialist
and former research fellow in UNH Family Research Laboratory, and
a team of experts in psychiatry, law, political science, and psychology
summarize the scientific research on child sexual abuse. In it,
they also offer recommendations to researchers and policy makers.
The authors cite research that shows a range of lifelong negative
consequences for victims. To address serious gaps in the research-based
understanding of child sex abuse, the authors call for (1) stepping
up interdisciplinary research efforts to determine its prevalence
and identify its causes and consequences, as well as the most effective
forms of prevention and treatment; (2) expanding the National Child
Traumatic Stress Network, a federally funded coalition of 54 centers
providing community-based treatment to children and their families;
and (3) creating an Institute of Child Abuse and Interpersonal Violence
within the National Institutes of Health.
Marianne Fortescue, coordinator of UNH's Partnership for Social
Action, has been appointed chairperson of the board of Volunteer
NH!, an organization that oversees national service programs (AmeriCorps)
in the state and provides training, recognition and a central site
for volunteers and volunteer programs to strengthen communities.
