John Laymon was born, raised, and currently resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. He attended UNH on a full Dr. Martin Luther King Scholarship where he was the first; and presently remains the only African American to graduate from UNH with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at UNH, he played basketball for Coach Gerry Friel.

Mr. Laymon is President and sole owner of JRL Enterprises, Inc., one of the largest Minority businesses in Pittsburgh. The company provides manufacturing and professional services. He has been recognized by Junior Achievement as Entrepreneur of the Year, by 100 Black Men of Western Pennsylvania as Minority Business Person of the Year, by UNH College of Engineering and Physical Science and CEPS with the Distinguished Service Award, and many others.  He serves on numerous Boards including UNH Foundation, Hill House, POISE Foundation, Pittsburgh African American Chamber of Commerce and Minority Business Advisor to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Advisor to the UNH Mechanical Engineering Department.

Mr. Laymon spends most of his spare time vacationing with his wife of 38 years Brenda and their daughter Jenea, working on social programs, concentrating on urban youth with his Brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and playing golf.
