Fire safety is Everyone's Business

So you already know what size fridge and microwave you can bring and what kind of appliances are prohibited, but there's more....

Candles are a HUGE no-no. As a matter of fact candles, tarts, incense and other items with a wick (such as kerosene lamps) and other items that create and hold a flame are prohibited. Incense and incense paraphernalia are strictly prohibited.

Smoking is not allowed in any residence halls nor is it permitted within 20 feet of the building. Residence halls and the surrounding perimeters are smoke-free areas.

All residence halls are protected by automatic fire detection systems which connect directly to the Durham Fire Department. The fire protection system in each residence hall is comprised of smoke and heat detectors, sprinklers and hallway manual pull stations. All rooms have a sprinker and local-sounding smoke detector.

Remember it's up to you to create a safe and hazard free environment (just like Smokey Bear, 'only you can prevent fires'). So, don't allow your room exits to be blocked, don't tamper with your smoke alarm, don't cover every inch of your walls with combustible paper, leave your candles at home and think safety first!
