UNH IT Phishing Information

How to Spot UNH-Specific Phishing:
-
UNH IT WILL NEVER ASK FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION VIA EMAIL. It is critical to understand that UNH IT takes the protection of private data very seriously.
- UNH IT should never ask you for an academic, administrative, or E-mail password. Ever. Not on the phone, not via E-mail, never.
- UNH IT will not ask you to verify any personal information via E-mail. Personal information includes:
- Passwords
- Date of Birth
- Social Security Number
- Bank Account Numbers
- Bank PINs
- All communications sent from UNH IT are edited for grammar and spelling. While we may not be perfect, obvious mistakes would not make it past the editors.
- Note from whom the E-mail comes:
- The following are NOT valid UNH departments or groups:
- UNH. BETA
- University Team
- Webmail Messaging Center
- All E-mails sent from UNH will end in @unh.edu. UNH does NOT use .com E-mails.
- Any E-mails sent from other @***.edu accounts are not valid. E-mails from other educational establishments can be considered compromised accounts. This means that the @***.edu account owner replied to a phishing attempt, their account was compromised and used to send out more phishing E-mails. Most messages from @***.edu accounts will demand that you reply to a different address.
- If you are ever unsure, please call the UNH IT Help Desk at 603.862.4242 to verify the validity of any suspicious E-mails.
- Consider the subject line of the E-mail.
- Confirm Your Webmail Account Details Immediately – Demanding Tone, Deadline
- Upgarde – Spelling Error
- UP DATE YOUR EMAIL NOW – Spelling error, demanding, and deadline. Also, in internet etiquette, using all capitals is equivalent to screaming or shouting. It is considered rude.
- Confirm Your unh.edu Webmail Account – Demanding Tone
- Dear Cisunix.unh.edu Webmail Account User – This one is tricky, as the spammers have gotten hold of our nomenclature “cisunix.unh.edu”. However, notice that the subject line includes “Dear.” The salutation should not be in the subject line.
