Remember the days when you would cry at the mention of bed time?  All the fighting for only an extra hour of TV time.  As a college student, sleep seems to become more of a reward; one that you could not be happier to achieve!  When your work is done for the day you can finally relax and dream away all of your stress.  More and more sleep is being lost today though, especially in the lives of college students.  Not getting enough sleep can harm your physical health, mental health, and overall quality of life.  Harvard Women’s Health Watch reported that most adults are getting less than 6 hours of sleep each night and 75% of people are experiencing sleep difficulties on a weekly basis.  Not getting enough sleep can affect your mood, ability to concentrate, and your energy levels.  This can lead to many negative outcomes on your school work, job responsibilities, and even your relationships.  Decreased sleep can also have effects on your immune system, making you more susceptible to illnesses and increasing the chance of depression or anxiety.

The Harvard Women’s Health Watch revealed their top six reasons for getting enough sleep and highlighted its importance.  First on the list mentioned the effect sleep has on learning and memory.  Did you know that while you sleep your brain is forming newly learned information into memory? After a long day of class and studying, a goodnight of sleep is exactly what your body needs!  Getting enough sleep will also increase your mood, help your concentration, and increase your patience levels.  Most adults function best with 8 hours of sleep, so try to strive for getting those couple extra hours into your nightly routine!  Click here to find some great tips for improving your sleep!
