Physical activity does not necessarily require going to the gym.  Why spend time exercising indoors when you have the glorious wilderness to explore?! Hiking is a great workout—for the body and the mind. Even a couple miles is a great cardiovascular workout, especially if you’re carrying extra weight like a backpack with water or snacks. The serenity of nature allows your mind to be at ease as you trek the trail. The combination of aerobic activity and meditation provides a unique experience, unparalleled by other forms of physical activity.

Like to dance? Looking to get in shape or change up your cardio workout? Ever heard of Zumba? Zumba is an energetic dance class where participants are able to let loose and have fun!  I took a Zumba class a few days ago after a two-year hiatus of zumba-ing and I honestly forgot how much fun it was! The dance moves are relatively simple but fast paced to get your heartbeat going. Most of the music is top-40’s hits that you can sing along to if you want to make the most of the experience. It’s a one-hour class of dancing to the beat in a room of 30+ people doing the same thing.

Losing weight, working out consistently, eating healthy foods, spending less money and making sure to floss are all very popular New Year's resolutions. Ever since the calendar struck January every magazine features some new way to help you drop pounds, clothing stores move their workout gear to the front entrance and every other commercial is about some new diet pill that will transform your body. Instead of feeding into these traps and fads that set you up for failure (whether it is with your body goals or your wallet) why not transform yourself the right way.

As I was sitting in my apartment, cooped up during the crazy snowstorm we had this weekend here in Durham and I started thinking about how I can get a workout without having to trek across campus to the gym. I also did not have the tools to ski or snowshoe, so how could I exercise at all?

It’s tough to stay in shape. As college students, we are committed to our education and clubs, and we want to spare some time for fun too.  Even when we find the spare minutes to fit in some physical activity, it’s incredibly easy to come up with any excuse not to work out. It’s cold, it’s early, it’s raining, my knee hurts… Well, you know. The list goes on. But what if your workout was actually fun, and you were surrounded by your friends the whole time? That’s one reason why group fitness classes are superbly beneficial in helping busy people stay in shape.

Whatever the reason may be for people to start a workout regiment, we all have one thing in common when being at the gym; we all want to maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, many people hold different beliefs regarding the benefits on the gym and it is very important to be able to differentiate fact from myth.
