With so many delicious food tempting you, it can be difficult to maintain your healthy habits during the holiday season. Splurging on Thanksgiving dinner can set off a domino effect for eating habits throughout the holidays. Take control of the day and jumpstart your motivation for a happy and healthy holiday season. Incorporating fresh vegetables and produce into Thanksgiving dishes can bring health color and flavor to your table!

When the seasons change it is hard to do a physical activity. Luckily our campus offers great physical activities all year round. One hidden gem is the Swasey indoor pool. Swimming is one physical activity that uses all your muscles. The resistance of the water makes body movements tougher without straining your body. It also helps prevent sudden movements that could cause injury. At the gym you are pounding on your legs when you are running or jolting from lifting weights. These actions can cause real damage on your body.

Given our active student body at UNH, many students come back for fall semester motivated to start off the semester with a new workout routine. Many can find the gym to be overwhelming and the chaos of back to school season to be too much. The beginning of the semester is the perfect time to try a new approach to physical activity, and September just happens to be national yoga month! So toss on some comfy clothes, grab a water bottle and head to a class right on campus!

Do you love to play sports but don’t have the time to commit to a club or university team? If so, intramural sports are a great alternative for you! UNH offers over 20 different types of intramurals, including traditional games such as soccer, flag football, and field hockey and some rather untraditional sports like broomball or wheelchair ultimate Frisbee. Virtually anyone can play: undergraduate, graduates, faculty, and staff members. The only extra qualification for employees is that you must be a member of the Hamel Rec Center.

The weather is getting cooler and the leaves are falling, but that doesn’t mean you have to huddle up for winter quite yet. Campus Rec Outdoor Adventures is offering some great fall trips to stay active outside before the snow falls. It’s mid-semester and many students are getting bogged down with school work, but it is important to continue exercising and getting physical activity even as we start to head indoors more.

Homecoming weekend is right around the corner, which means fall weather, school spirit, a football game, and of course a 5k road race to start it all off! The race begins at 9am on Saturday, October 11th above the train tracks in front of the Whittemore Center. Coordinated by Campus Rec, the 5k has been a highlight of homecoming for many community members over the years. Campus Rec has a map posted online tracing the running route so you know what to expect.

Durham is alive again with the buzz of returning students! Campus is back in full swing with classes starting and friends reuniting. With so many changes happening, it can be hard to keep your head on straight and manage your stress. Maybe that first day of that Biochemistry class made it seem like it will be way over your head. Maybe you’re not comfortable in your dorm yet and don’t feel at home.

            September is celebrated as National Yoga Month! Not only is yoga a great workout, it is an exercise in discipline and mental focus. The Yoga Health Foundation promotes National Yoga Month and works to draw awareness to yoga and spread the activity across the nation.
