Getting our daily dosage of physical activity is extremely important; providing countless health benefits, ranging from disease prevention to positive mental health. Regardless of how important it is, it can be very challenging for people to find a form of physical activity that really works for them. Not everybody enjoys running or cross-fit, and can be discouraged by the gym. Good news! There is a great form of physical activity out there that is good for the soul and doesn’t even require you to leave your bedroom.  Yoga!

Pumpkin spice lattes have left the building and have been replaced by cups covered in snowflakes and filled with peppermint flavors. This can only mean one thing: winter is on the way. Whether you have been keeping active all semester or are just looking to start, winter is a great time to spice up your workout routine and try something new. Living in New England we are lucky enough to experience all four seasons and have access to many winter sports people living in warmer climates aren’t able to participate in.

Heart rate is a great tool to have when it comes to being physically active.Monitoring your heart rate can tell you how hard your heart is working.A target heart rate is an ideal range for working out.It is about 50-85% of your maximum heart rate.Below this range and you may not be working hard enough to see health benefits.Above this range can be dangerous as it is straining your heart.Target heart rates can be different for everyone.As you age, your target heart rate decreases.

This past summer, I volunteered for a week at a summer camp for children with diabetes.The American Diabetes Association’s, Camp Carefree was geared toward bringing children with diabetes together and providing them with support from all over the country. The kids amazed me every single day with their knowledge and bravery. I knew nothing about how hard their daily lives were; I only knew what I had learned in classes at UNH.
