Kathleen Grace-Bishop
Director of Education and Promotion, Health Services
Kathleen was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and still has the accent to prove it. She attended the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) where she received her B.S. in Human Development. After graduation she worked for a year as Assistant to the Director of the Total Alcohol Awareness Program at PSU. She came to UNH in 1983 in the role as alcohol and other drug educator. During her years at UNH she has done programming and counseling in various areas of health education including wellness, eating concerns, nutrition, stress management, sexuality – just to name a few.
In 1989, she became Associate Director of the Health Services. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist. She received her Master in Human Services Administration from Antioch New England Graduate School. Her area of study was organizational development/change and leadership. She felt this was a logical next step in her interest in helping create change, not only working with individuals and communities as they create change, but also organizations.
Kathleen is obsessive about learning and developing new skills so she can assist herself and others to reach their potentials, so she has also received training as a mediator, sexual assault advocate, HIV counselor, and intervention specialist.
In her role as Director of Education and Promotion she is responsible for marketing, staff development, and patient education for the Health Services. As a Wellness Educator and Counselor, Kathleen enjoys providing outreach education, counseling, and support on a variety of physical, emotional and spiritual health issues for the university community. Her areas of interests include alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, eating concerns (including intervening with someone who might have an eating concern), wellness, women’s health issues, and spirituality.
Kathleen really enjoys the fact that her job allows her to be very involved with the campus community through various committees and activities. She teaches a course for the Social Work Department on alcohol and alcoholism. She has also been able to be involved with education programming in the area of social justice and diversity. She lives her passion for the environment by working with the Office of Sustainability Programs.
Kathleen truly enjoys her work at UNH. She believes it is an honor to assist individuals and communities in their journeys of self-discovery. She believes one of the most important things she can do for another is to witness their journeys and be truly present to their process - to be heard, to be valued. She is very committed to the role of prevention, of assisting others in self-care and decision making that enhances their health and well-being. She is committed to providing information, support, and challenge so that members of the UNH community can learn, and grow.
Kathleen loves to read any books that speak to the spirit and the soul. She is into energy medicine and is a Reiki Master. She enjoys spending time with nature no matter the season. She really is a homebody who relaxes through exercise, meditation and yoga. She craves times to hang out family and friends and engage in discussion about politics, current events and the meaning of life.
