What are Anabolic Steroids?

Anabolic steroids are synthetic substances that mimic the male sex hormone testosterone, which helps build muscle tissue and increase body mass

Why Do People Use Steroids?

  • Improve athletic performance
  • Increase muscle size and/or reduce body fat
  • Peer pressure to have or develop a certain type of body

Possible Steroid Side Effects:

  • Shrinking of testicles
  • Reduced sperm count
  • Impotence
  • Baldness
  • Urinary and bowel problems
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Increase in nipple and breast size
  • Severe acne
  • Liver damage
  • High blood pressure
  • Reduction in HDL, the "good" cholesterol
  • Headaches
  • Aching joints
  • Jaundice
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Prematurely halts growth in adolescents and young adults
  • Extreme mood swings
  • Impaired judgment from feelings of invincibility

What You Can Do:

  • Realize there are many ways to increase strength or improve appearance
  • Train safely, without using drugs
  • Eat a healthy diet and get plenty of sleep
  • Understand that your were born with a specific genetic make-up, and that some people develop muscular builds more easily than others
  • If you use steroids, find support to help you stop using
