FILM AND DISCUSSION: MISS REPRESENTATION

  • 7 P.M. - 8:30 P.M.
  • Theatre II, MUB
In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, women hold only 3% of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65% of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors. Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave you shaken and armed with a new perspective.

Post film discussion will be led by the Eating Concerns Mentors and Maria Caplan, Nutrition Educator/Counselor at Health Services. If you participate in this event, you will be entered to win a massage therapy session at Health Services.

Thursday - October 30

Operation Beautiful at UNH

OPERATION BEAUTIFUL

  • ALL DAY
  • AROUND CAMPUS
The goal of the Operation Beautiful is to end negative self-talk because it hurts all of us emotionally, spiritually, and physically.   Operation Beautiful begins by leaving positive messages on the mirrors of public restrooms — at work, at the gym, in your classroom or dorm—above water fountain.  Scribble down whatever comes to mind — "You are beautiful!" or "You are amazing just the way you are!"  Maybe some people read them and just smile, sometimes people are truly touched by the effort of a random stranger.

Stop by our events throughout the week to grab your official “keep body talk positive” post its or you can just use your own.

Friday - October 31

MINDFUL EATING ICE CREAM SOCIAL

  • 3 P.M. - 4:30 P.M.
  • Health Services (Conference Rooms on second floor)
Do you feel guilty eating desserts? Does this leave you feeling out of control and you overeat?  We will help you learn to enjoy eating these foods and eat them mindfully. Have a fun time, enjoy delicious desserts and learn mindful eating techniques with the Eating Concerns Mentors and Maria Caplan, Nutrition Educator/Counselor who specializes in mindful eating and eating concerns.
