Am I required to list my legal name/gender marker on Health Services forms?
Yes, you are required to use your legal name and gender marker on forms for Health Services since they are a part of your health record. Identity information on your health record needs to be consistent with the information we receive from the University and what also appears on your University ID. These all need to be consistent for verification, which we are required to do by law.
How do I get my preferred name/gender marker noted in Health Services' systems?
If you would like to inform us of a name or gender marker that you use, but has not been changed legally, you can come into the Health Records and Registration Department or you can call Lois Ratto, Coordinator of Health Records and Registration at (603) 862-1987 and it will be noted in your electronic health record.
Changes in your gender marker may impact what services are covered by your health insurance plan. Please contact your health insurance carrier for more information.
Can I list/change preferred pronouns on Health Services forms/systems?
We do not ask for information related to gender on our forms, since that information is already a part of your health record based on the information we receive from the University. Let us know if you would like to be identified differently then information we receive from the University.

Transgender Health Care Services at UNH
Our physicians, Dr. Lessa Brill and Dr. Jerry Collins have an interest in transgender care and have received some training in this area. They can work with your provider to assist with continuity of care.
Can I get standard exams of whatever type I need regardless of my gender identity or expression at Health Services (pap smear, breast exam, hernia test, prostate exam, etc.)?
Yes, you can receive standard exams provided at Health Services that you need, regardless of your gender identity or expression.
Does Health Services maintain information about professionals providing Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?
Yes, Health Services has information about professionals providing HRT. Call (603) 862-2856 for more information.
Does Health Services maintain information about surgeons providing Gender Confirmation Surgery (GCS)?
Yes, Health Services has information about professionals providing GCS. Call (603) 862-2856 for more information.
Can I get a written referral to an endocrinologist for HRT?
Some insurance carriers may require a written referral for an endocrinologist. Please contact your insurance carrier prior to your appointment to see whether or not a written referral is needed and if this referral can be provided by a Health Services clinician, or if it will need to be written by your primary care provider.
Can I get a written referral to a surgeon for Gender Confirmation Surgery (GCS)?
Some insurance carriers may require a written referral to a surgeon for GCS. Please contact your insurance carrier prior to your appointment to see whether or not a written referral is needed and if this referral can be provided by a Health Services clinician, or if it will need to be written by your primary care provider.
Prescriptions and Lab Tests at Health Services
Can I get a prescription written for hormones/anti-androgens?
Yes, Dr. Lessa Brill can write prescriptions for hormones/anti-androgen, after there has been a hormone readiness assessment completed with a counselor/therapist.
Will the pharmacy fill a prescription for hormones/anti-androgens?
If you have the Student Health Benefits Plan (SHBP), yes, we can fill a prescription for hormones/anti-androgens.
If you have another insurance plan, you will need to fill your prescription at an outside pharmacy regardless of who wrote the prescription.
Will hormone prescriptions be covered by the health fee?
The health fee does not cover the cost of hormone prescriptions. Please check with your insurance carrier to see if they will cover hormone prescriptions.
Will Health Services staff order blood tests related to HRT?
Health Services clinicians can order blood tests related to HRT.
Will the lab do blood tests ordered by an outside provider?
Yes, Health Services laboratory will perform blood tests ordered by an outside provider. Please come to the Health Services lab with clearly written orders from the ordering provider. The lab will also need the fax number of the ordering provider where we can fax your test results. There will be a charge for the blood tests performed.
Will HRT-related blood tests be covered by the health fee?
The health fee does not cover the cost of HRT related blood tests. Please check with your insurance carrier to see if they will cover these lab tests.
Can Health Services staff offer me advice about transition-related procedures and medication?
At the current time, Health Services clinicians cannot provide advice about medication or other transition-related procedures. The Health Services clinical staff wants students to receive the best possible care and we want to help connect you with the appropriate providers. Please contact us for referrals.
Will Health Services staff help me administer HRT-related treatments (such as injections)?
Yes, Health Services staff can assist with the administration of prescribed HRT-related treatments.
