|
Sedimentary 13,528 ft (4,123 m) |
| Bedrock: Hades Pass unit, Uinta Mountain Group |
Middle Proterozoic |
| Grayish-red, brownish-red and whitish-gray quartz sandstone, arkose and shale containing thick lenticular red shale beds on the north side of the Uinta Range. The rocks were folded in the late Cretaceous Laramide Orogeny by the Uinta Arch, such that rock layers on Kings Peak dip south. The length of the arch trends east-west, controlling the orientation of the range, which is also cut by steep east-west normal faults. The Green River follows the down-dropped valley north of the North Flank fault.
Surficial Geology: During the Late Quaternary glacial maximum, alpine glaciers carved horns, arętes, cirques and tarns in the sedimentary rocks. Soil Series: No soil survey has been published for this county. The summit is mantled by a layer of broken rock due to frost action.
