Corn blocks the "view" at Iowa’s high point. (1996) Ocheyedan Mound. (1996)

Bedrock: No rock exposed at surface.
Underlying bedrock is likely Cretaceous.

Surficial Geology: Part of the Northwest Iowa Plains landform region. Glacial till with granite boulders. Nearby Ocheyedan Mound (elev. 1613 ft), an eroded knob of Cary (late Wisconsinan) glacial drift in a moraine left by the Des Moines lobe of ice, is a more prominent hill than the high point, and well worth a visit.

Soil Series: Clarion clay loam. Gently sloping, well drained soil, with upper black layer over dark brown to yellowish-brown subsoil, on knolls in uplands, developed on glacial till under prairie grasses. Well suited for crops such as corn and soybeans.
