This position will oversee the maintenance of buildings, grounds, equipment, and care of livestock at Glynwood’s Hudson Valley Farm Business Incubator site. The Hudson 

Valley Farm Business Incubator provides access to land, housing, shared equipment 

and infrastructure, farm and business mentoring, and low-interest capital to start-up farm businesses. The Site Manager will supervise an apprentice, mentor incubator program participants, and oversee the work of contractors on the property. 

 

Additional roles include farmer training, administration, communications, and 

development activities in support of Glynwood’s farmer training programs. 

 

The Site Manager will work at the incubator site in New Paltz and remotely, as directed by the Vice-President of Operations. Residence in a private apartment on the incubator site in New Paltz, NY is a required condition of employment. 

 

Key Areas of Responsibility 

  • Responsible for the      maintenance of the incubator site, including minor repairs, carpentry,      painting, and lawn care. 
  • Solicit bids and manage      contractors’ work. 
  • “On call” to help resolve      problems or emergencies associated with any activity on site. 
  • Assure that driveway and      internal roadways remain open and accessible; primary responsibility for      snowplowing, tree removal, pothole repair, etc. 
  • Keep maintenance records of      all incubator vehicles and equipment and schedule or perform repairs and      routine maintenance as required. 
  • Oversee agricultural activity      on the incubator site, including supervising the proper use of shared      equipment used by incubator participants. 
  • Responsible for care of      Glynwood-owned livestock on the property, including feeding, watering,      manure management, and compost-making. 
  • Develop and coordinate the      rotational grazing plans for the incubator property. 
  • Perform other agricultural      duties or manage custom work (i.e., soil testing, mowing, brush clearing,      haymaking, field cultivation, fence installation). 
  • Serve as a mentor, deliver      specific trainings, and teach practical skills workshops to beginning      farmers. 
  • Work with the Vice-President      of Operations, Property Manager, and Director of Farmer Training to      develop and maintain a Maintenance Master Plan for the incubator site,      including a plan of lines and other buried infrastructure on the incubator      property. 
  • Assist in updating farmer      training record keeping and budget data, as directed by the Director of      Farmer Training. 
  • Facilitate community living      and enforcement of related policies for residential incubator      participants. 
  • Represent Glynwood to the      general public in a professional and courteous manner. There is a      right-of-way for Mohonk Preserve visitors through the incubator site, so      the Site Manager will serve as a first point-of-contact for hikers. 
  • Assist with development      activities related to Glynwood’s farmer training work, as needed.      Participation in development activities may require some travel and      flexibility in scheduling. 

 Qualifications and Experience Required 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree. 
  • 3+ years experience in      sustainable agriculture. 
  • 3+ years experience in      mechanical repairs and property maintenance. 
  • Affinity for Glynwood’s      mission. 
  • Valid US driver’s license in      good standing and U.S. citizenship or U.S. work permit.  

Skills Required 

 

  • Ability to perform outdoor      physical labor in all weather conditions. 
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds on      a regular basis. 
  • Competence in mechanical      repairs, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and property      maintenance. 
  • Competence in tractor use,      livestock care, and compost making. 
  • Excellent communication and      interpersonal skills. 
  • Organizational and project      management skills. 
  • Ability to communicate in      English, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Familiarity with email and      word processing software. 
  • Ability to collaborate with      Glynwood employees in a collegial manner. 
  • Strong supervisory and      teaching skills. 

A residence is provided on site for the Site Manager as the facilities operate seven days a week and presence is required. Must provide advanced notice to Vice-President of Operations if offsite overnight or for more than 12 hours.

Title: Farmer Training Program Coordinator

The Farmer Training Program Coordinator will facilitate Glynwood’s efforts to train the next generation of farmers. Working closely with the Director of Farmer Training, the Farmer Training Program Coordinator will help refine a formalized curriculum and facilitate trainings for beginning farmers. The Farmer Training Program 

Coordinator will participate in administrative, outreach, communications, and development efforts related to farmer training opportunities. Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of project management experience, as well as experience with sustainable agriculture and farm-based education. Candidates should be proficient with Microsoft Office and social media. 

 

The Farmer Training Program Coordinator will work from the Cold Spring office, the incubator site in New Paltz, and remotely, as needed. 

 

Key Areas of Responsibility 

 

  • Refine and facilitate a      formal educational curriculum for Glynwood’s farm apprentice program and      the Hudson Valley Farm Business Incubator. 
  • Facilitate practical skills      trainings, business education and mentoring, and related course work      including lectures, directed readings, peer learning group, hands-on      trainings, and webinars. 
  • Research national models for      farmer training and stay up to date on trends in the program area. 
  • Assist with farmer training      administration activities include writing and editing, updating web      content and budget data, and communications. 
  • Assist Glynwood’s      Communications Manager with integration of program and promotional      information into Glynwood materials in print and online. 
  • Attend conferences and      meetings to network, promote, and recruit for Glynwood’s farmer training      programs. 
  • Develop and facilitate      evaluation processes for the farmer training program area. 
  • Assist with coordination of      Mid Hudson CRAFT. 
  • Assist with development      activities related to Glynwood’s farmer training work. 

Qualifications and Experience Required 

  • Bachelor’s degree. 
  • Demonstrated success in      developing and implementing public programs. 
  • 3-5 years experience in      project management. 
  • Experience in sustainable      agriculture and farm-based education preferred.
  • Affinity for Glynwood’s      mission. 
  • Valid US driver’s license in      good standing and U.S. citizenship or U.S. work permit.
