ABOUT US: Food Sovereignty Tours is a program of Food First/the Institute for
Food and Development Policy. We create international and domestic travel
experiences that focus on understanding local and global struggles for food
sovereignty.

OUR MISSION: Our mission is to build the global and U.S. movements for Food
Sovereignty through solidarity travel and immersion learning.

SUMMARY: This position will primarily be responsible for spearheading research
related to the political economy of sustainable tourism, education, and
movement building for Food First’s Fall Backgrounder, tentatively entitled
“Food Sovereignty Tours and the Politics of Agro-food Tourism” to be published
November 2013. Food First Backgrounders are 2,000-word primers on timely
issues related to food justice and food sovereignty. This will include
supporting the research team by developing a literature review, documenting
sources and possibly contributing writing for the final report. The research
intern will also have duties related to researching and writing blog posts as
well as developing and updating our educational materials such as our Readers
and Activist Toolkit.

Specific Duties may include:
•       Background research on sustainable tourism, eco-tourism, agro-tourism
and political tourism
•       Develop an annotated bibliography and draft a literature review
•       Writing and researching for blogs related to food, agriculture and
social movements in destination countries (e.g. South Korea, Italy, Basque
Country, Cuba, Bolivia, Oaxaca)
•       Research and update educational materials for Readers

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The ideal candidate must have strong research, writing, and organizational
skills.  Must be a self-starter. They must also be passionate about our work
and it’s broader implications in the political sphere.

Requirements:
•       Strong research skills; Familiarity with academic search tools
•       Excellent written and communication skills
•       Self Motivated
•       Must be a senior undergraduate or hold an undergraduate degree in the
social sciences
•       Experience or prior studies in sustainable development or sustainable
tourism a plus
•       Access to university/subscription research tools (JStor, LexisNexis,
etc.) a plus

Commitment:
The Research Intern will be required to commit to a minimum of 15-20 hours/
week for minimum duration of four months from July to October 2013.

publication by internationally respected think tank Food First. The Intern
will also gain useful experience writing and researching, while learning about
educational travel and international movement building. In addition, Food
First is a dynamic environment for networking with local and global
organizations, NGOs, scholars and activist working in a broad range of fields
related to social justice in food and agriculture.  This is an unpaid
position.
