Hiring Announcement:  West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition seeks Executive Director

 

The West Virginia Food and Farm Coalition seeks a dynamic, entrepreneurial, committed leader to help build and support West Virginia's rapidly growing local food system.  Since 2010, the Coalition (www.wvhub.org/wvffc) has supported a statewide network of West Virginians working to grow food and farm businesses while improving access to healthy local food.  The position of Executive Director requires a special individual who is willing to work hard, think outside the box, be an advocate for farmers and consumers, and build partnerships outside of traditional "silos" in order to continue the Coalition's success in promoting food and agriculture as a critical part of West Virginia's economy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge and experience: Three to five years of program and staff management experience. Demonstrated successful experience working on partnership-based and team-based projects and with diverse groups of individuals, including people from rural and agricultural backgrounds.   Intimate familiarity with the Appalachian farming context, with an in-depth knowledge of West Virginia strongly preferred.  Detailed knowledge of, or at least three years' experience with, one or more of the following:  farming and agriculture, agricultural education, food processing, food aggregation and distribution, nutrition and food access, food purchasing and/or marketing.  Successful experience with grantwriting, development of funding strategies, and donor development in support of an organizational mission.  Skills in proactive marketing and promotion.  Familiarity with nonprofit and/or business management including budgeting, partnership formation, program development and management, strategic planning and board development.  B.A. or B.S. required, ideally in a related field.

 

Personal characteristics: Strongly articulated interest in local food systems.  Excellent interpersonal skills.  Outstanding abilities in strategic and analytical thinking.  Demonstrated ability to create multi-year plans and to follow through.  Outgoing; well-organized; attentive to detail; creative; able to work on multiple projects at once; able to work successfully on a team with diverse members; willingness to travel frequently, including day and overnight travel by automobile.  Must have valid driver's license.

 

Technology and software: Word-processing and spreadsheet skills (MS Word and Excel); proficiency communicating via e-mail.  Comfort using (or learning) web-based communication tools such as Google docs and Constant Contact is preferred.

 

Communications: Comfortable initiating contact and communications with prospective clients and partners; strong written and interpersonal communication skills.  Good public speaking skills.

 

Physical: Good vision with or without corrective lenses necessary for computer work; manual dexterity needed to operate computer. Ability to travel independently.

 

Location: 

Must be located within West Virginia.  Location is ultimately flexible, but the Coalition's office is currently in Oak Hill, WV.  The successful applicant would be required to report to this office for at least the first four months in order to train with the current Director.  

 

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:  Salary will be commensurate with experience, within the range of $46,000-$48,000/year, subject to successful fundraising after the first 1.5 years.  Benefits are available, to be negotiated.
