Recruiting for Eight AmeriCorps VISTA Positions in Missouri

The deadline for applying for these positions is 5:00PM Friday June 21, 2013.

1.      Southern Boone Learning Garden Activity VISTA
The Learning Garden Activity Coordinator will serve in Ashland, Missouri (just
south of Columbia) with the Southern Boone Learning Garden working on the
following activities: Oversee After-School Garden Club (coordinate volunteers,
design & implement student/volunteer evaluations); Develop Volunteer Policy &
Procedures manual – document ‘best practices’ for recruitment, training,
coordinating volunteers; Design and implement, volunteer training workshops;
Assist with curriculum development, lesson planning, instruction; Oversee
management of volunteer database(s); Assist with website/social media
communications & online calendars, PR, networking; Assist with professional
development for teachers – planning, development, coordination,
implementation, & evaluation; Assist teachers & volunteers to coordinate &
maintain garden plantings, projects, class use, etc.; Develop, maintain, &
update interpretive signs, interactive displays, and on-site garden
communication; Assist with school garden outreach efforts – presentations to
schools; written, on-line & oral communications with individuals & groups.

2.      Columbia Farmers’ Market Local Food VISTA
Columbia Farmers’ Market Local Food VISTA will: Assist with website/social
media communications; Create connections with community organization currently
serving low-income families;  Disseminate information about the Access to
Healthy Food Program; Help Access to Healthy Food families shop at the
farmers’ market; Develop and Implement a children’s activity program at the
farmers’ market; Recruit Volunteers from community organizations to help with
implementation of children’s activities; Create a seasonal sampling schedule
and highlight seasonally available products;  Connect consumers with growers
and artisans;  Expand customer e-newsletter database; Write and distribute the
e-newsletters to the database.

3.      Local Food Production Special Event and Fundraising VISTA
This VISTA will work with the Missouri River Communities Network on the
following activities: Provide capacity building support to enhance local food
production, processing and marketing in the mid-Missouri; Enhance
relationships between producers and consumers and organize and promote special
events; Design, organize, publicize and implement one-day local food related
regional training conferences with presentations, workshops and discussion;
Develop and implement surveys then prepare a written summary of the results of
the survey. Plan, organize and implement fundraising events that include
music, food, drinks, silent auction, and event sponsors; Create a corporate
fundraising booklet with summaries of the organization’s successful
activities, pictures, testimonies from organizations and customers who have
benefited from MRCN activities; Assist Board Members to implement fundraising
campaign; Publish this booklet and create fundraising packets to give to
potential donors; Maintain member database and utilize for fundraising.


4.      Missouri Local Food Public Relations VISTA Member
Missouri Local Food Public Relations VISTA Member duties will work with the
Missouri River Communities Network on the following activities:  Enhance and
maintain the various project websites; Create, write, layout, publish and
distribute 3 newsletters each year; Write all press releases about activities
and maintain connection to media outlets; Create posters for events,
workshops, marketing and distribute to the public; Assist with organizing
public events (volunteer events, fundraising events, planning meetings, board
meetings, etc); Develop brochures and information booklets for educational
activities; Design, develop and publish short video pieces for web promotion;
Initiate social networking; Maintain database of all members, supporters and
volunteers; Integrate facebook networking into public relations for the
project; Twitter: develop a twitter following and keep the account updated;
Develop, create and distribute email blasts through online email program;
Develop and publish an Annual Report of the Project Activities.

5.      Springfield Urban Agriculture Coalition (SUAC) School Education
The DIRT (Dig In R Twelve) VISTA will help build the capacity of Springfield
Urban Agriculture Coalition (SUAC) with a focus on its school education garden
program, DIRT. Support DIRT program development through assisting in volunteer
recruitment, training, support, coordination, and tracking. Assist in
fostering teacher, administrator, school, and community relationships. Assist
in the development and implementation of schoolyard garden curriculum and
maintenance. Assist in researching best practices and assist to implement
changes within DIRT. Assist in DIRT community events. Increase community
awareness and support. Maintain social media presence. Provide outreach
through booths at organization, community, and partner events. Provide PR and
marketing to include flyers, social media and email blasts, and electronic
newsletters. Assist in fundraising and grant writing efforts to support SUAC
and the DIRT Project. Develop Standard Operating Procedures and track data for
SUAC and DIRT activities.

6.      Springfield Urban Ag Coalition VISTA Member
Expand Community Awareness of SUAC;  Maintain social media presence; Organize
events and booths at community events; Promote SUAC through a variety of
mediums; Manage on-site Markets at various garden sites; Work with PTA and
local organizations to link projects.
Develop and refine fundraising campaign; Organize annual Cocktails and Wellies
event; Manage Parent Involvement events; Market the CRAFT program; Develop,
write and publish handouts; Implement outreach for awareness and fundraising;
Record, track and file information on volunteers; Refine t-shirt and seed
fundraiser; Work with the Board to align fundraising with project needs;
Maintain workshop records and attendee feedback

7.      Hermann Local Food Promotion Project
VISTA Member will work in Hermann, Missouri a small German Heritage community
on the Missouri River with a long tradition of excellent German wines. 40
miles west of St. Louis, Missouri, the town derives much of it’s economic
development from Bed and Breakfasts, wine and tourism. The VISTA Member will
work on the following activities: Work with the 5 to 6 Farmer’s Markets in
region to connect residents and visitors to local crop producers; Assist with
organizing public events (food producer events, board meetings, etc); Utilize
social media to develop contact with local food customers and then network to
stay in contact with those customers; Maintain database of all members,
supporters and volunteers; Develop a twitter following and keep it updated;
Develop, create and distribute email blasts through online email program; Work
with the regional association to enhance membership, staff meetings and
enhance the project website; Maintain connection to media, write press
releases, etc.; Create posters for events.

8.      Missouri River Regional Food VISTA Member
This person will work with the Missouri River Bluffs Association on the
following activities: Connect local food producers with regional association.
Work with the 5 to 6 Farmer's Markets in the five-county Missouri River Bluffs
Association region to connect residents, customers and visitors to local crop
producers. Help to organize 5 or 6 Farmer's Market Festivals in the five-
county area. Utilize Social networking methods to develop contact with local
food customers and then utilize social networking methods to stay in contact
with those customers with coupons, special events, emails, etc. Maintain
database of all members, supporters and volunteers; Integrate facebook
networking into public relations; Twitter: develop a twitter following and
update regularly; Develop and distribute periodic email blasts; Work with the
regional association to enhance their project website.

AmeriCorps VISTA Program Benefits:
All of these positions are AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Benefits include:
Childcare assistance (if income eligible), Living allowance, ($11,136 / year
paid every two weeks, all taxable income); Choice of Education Award  ($5,550
to be used for student loans or future education expenses, also taxable, or
VISTA can give their education award to a son or daughter or grandchild) or
End of Service Stipend of $1,200 cash; Health insurance, Relocation Allowance,
and training. AmeriCorps VISTA Members are expected to work 40 hours per week
and are not allowed to have an additional job.
