Alumna Molly Hodgson Smith Returns to Campus to Engage Students
With over 12 years of executive director experience, Molly Hodgson Smith (International Affairs/Political Science/Spanish 1991) has loads of organizational and leadership savvy to share. In early November, the current executive director of the Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce did just that through CIE’s Happy Returns Program, which brings distinguished IA alumni back to campus to talk about the impact of the International Affairs major and enrich the student experience.
Back on campus 20 years after graduation, Hodgson Smith engaged students in classes and small groups about her role as a convener, facilitator, negotiator and conflict mediator. She shared real world examples of bringing together disparate groups to create common ground and mutually beneficial partnerships — from her years leading NH Made and NH Businesses for Social Responsibility, in addition to the Chamber. In particular, she found a great match with WSBE’s group S.I.G.N.A.L (Students interested in Growth, Networking and Leadership), where she led a spirited exchange on the power of networks and relationship cultivation.
Perhaps a bit unorthodox for IA alumni, Hodgson Smith has stayed local and pursued a career with a focus on NH. Like her fellow alumni whose work has a more international dimension, Hodgson Smith is a noteworthy example of the diverse career possibilities and impact of UNH International Affairs alumni. Look for a video interview with Hodgson Smith on the CIE website soon.
