  • UNH Cooperative Extension is seeking volunteers for three upcoming events designed to help restore the habitat of the endangered New England cottontail rabbit. In Dover and Durham, volunteers will plant native shrubs that the rabbits use for shelter.  

    Volunteers can choose any or all of the following days/locations: 

    • Saturday, April 20, Dover, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
    • Saturday, April 27, Durham, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
    • Sunday, April 28, Durham, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

    “This is a great chance to get outdoors and do good work for the benefit of an endangered species,” says Emma Carcagno, Cooperative Extension wildlife program assistant.

  • This summer, UNH will bring the magical world of Harry Potter to young learners who will have a chance to participate in the university’s first Massive Online Course for Kids (MOCK).

  • The John C Edwards Undergraduate Prize Plays honors outstanding work in playwriting, as well as directing, stage management and design. The program has been created to foster student playwriting through the development of new works. It has been underwritten through a generous gift by Mike O’Malley ’88, (“Diverting Devotion,” “Yes Dear” and “Glee”).

  • From the Pyrennes Mountains to the shores of southern Italy, from classic pastries to gluten-free concoctions, a new series of cooking classes at the Thompson School of Applied Science introduces adult learners to a wide range of cuisines and culinary techniques. 

    The classes, which are ongoing throughout the spring on Wednesday and Friday nights, can be taken individually or as themed series.  

    “These courses offer adults the chance to learn valuable skills and recipes they can use in a professional kitchen under the guidance of a professional chef,” says Julienne Guyette, chef and a lecturer in the Thompson School’s culinary arts program. “And, of course, everyone enjoys eating what they cook.”

  • Two new high tunnels growing greens for the UNH Dairy Bar are classrooms for the Food Production Field Experience class.

    Order a salad at UNH’s popular Dairy Bar restaurant, and you join a closed loop of sustainability: The greens were grown on campus, less than a mile away, by students in UNH’s sustainable agriculture and food systems major.   • U.S. lodging executives reported strong optimism about general business conditions in February, an improvement in their outlook compared with the prior month, according to the UNH Lodging Executives Sentiment Index (LESI) for the current month ending February 2013. The index increased from 61.7 in January 2013 to 72.6 in February 2013.  

    “This increase results from lodging executives’ positive opinions of the present general business conditions for their properties, as well as their optimism for general business conditions 12 months in the future. However, they were cautious about expectations for room reservations looking forward 12 months,” said Nelson Barber, associate professor of hospitality management, who manages the index. 

    Fifty-two percent of lodging executives indicated current business conditions were good, an improvement from 27 percent last month, while 43 percent indicated conditions were normal, down from 66 percent in January. Five...

  • The UNH ADVANCE program, funded by the National Science Foundation to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers, has awarded its Collaborative Scholarship Advancement Awards and the 2013 Karen Von Damm Leadership Development grant. UNH’s Leitzel Center for Mathematics, Science, and Engineering Education at UNH administers the grants.

  • Karen Bennett, Cooperative Extension professor and forest resources specialist, is one of the newest Fellows with the Society of American Foresters (SAF). 

    Bennett received the honor recently at an awards ceremony held in Bartlett. SAF honors members with the title of Fellow who have provided outstanding contributions to the society and to the forestry profession. The society recognizes only five percent of its members with this honor. 

    Brad Simpkins, interim director of the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands, said Bennett has dedicated her career “to helping forest landowners across the state, and this recognition is a testament to all she has done and continues to do.
