Relay for Life Marks 10 Years at UNH

Sarah Maskwa has the same bad reason to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life as many people do: someone she loved very much died of cancer.

Professor to Direct NSF’s National Ecological Observatory Network

Professor Scott Ollinger of the UNH’s Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space (EOS) and the department of Natural Resources and the Environment will serve as the first director of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON).  

4th Annual Peeps Contest Winners

The creative Peep-ole have done it again.

Using marshmallow Peeps, those candy treats that bloom around Easter, they’ve come up with really clever ways to show what being healthy means to them by creating dioramas for Health Services’ 4th Annual Peeps Contest.

The 11 entries garnered more than 300 votes.

This year’s winners in the individual category are:

1st Place: Kristin Onos, graduate student -- “Peeps on Mendums Pond”

2nd place: Kristin Blackwell, staff, chemistry department --, “Little Blue Peep’s Sustainable Farm”

Rivers Act as “Horizontal Cooling Towers,” Study Finds

Running two computer models in tandem, UNH scientists have detailed for the first time how thermoelectric power plants interact with climate, hydrology, and aquatic ecosystems throughout the northeastern U.S. and show how rivers serve as “horizontal cooling towers” that provide an important ecosystem service to the regional electricity sector — but at a cost to the environment.

PT Now Eligible for Tandem Rewards

By now you’ve heard of Tandem Health Advantage, the personal health care shopping service that compares medical fees and offers cash rewards to eligible UNH employees who opt to use a lower cost provider for qualifying tests or procedures.

Now, physical therapy (PT) has been added to the list; employees who call Tandem to find a lower cost provider before having treatment will receive $100. The incentive is for the entire course of therapy, not per visit. Meaning you get $100 whether you go four times or 10. 

Opening of Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics Celebrated

On April 12, UNH celebrated the opening of the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics and the generosity of philanthropist and alumnus Peter T. Paul, whose record-setting $25 million gift made the new college possible. The new building transforms the university’s graduate and undergraduate business education and reinforces its long, proud history of offering a first-rate business education.

14th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference Runs Through April 27

UNH’s 14th annual Undergraduate Research Conference (URC) takes place in Durham and Manchester  through April 27, 2013, featuring hundreds of UNH students from all academic disciplines presenting the results of their research, scholarship, engagement, and creative works.  

Students work with faculty mentors to conduct scholarly inquiry into topics that intrigue them, engaging in a process that teaches creative thinking and problem solving within their chosen disciplines.
