Art for The GraduateThe UNH Celebrity Series will present “LATW: The Graduate” Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Paul Creative Arts Center’s Johnson Theatre.

“The Graduate,” its characters, phrases, and themes, continue to ring true a half century after the publication of the novel. Whether seen on film or stage, or read, “The Graduate” has been a touchstone for generations, representing the universal feelings of rebellion, confusion, frustration, love, and redemption so honestly, and hilariously, embodied by the characters of Mrs. Robinson, Benjamin Braddock, Elaine, and the rest.

In the early 1960s, when Charles Webb wrote a novel called “The Graduate,” America was in an “age of youth.” Young people were leading the way to social, political, and cultural transformation. Webb’s novel, published in 1963, was groundbreaking in those changing times; reviewers unanimously praised his brilliant and innovative use of dialogue and comedic genius in dealing with controversial themes and the main character’s lack of direction.

In 1967, film was released featuring the Dustin Hoffman as the lost but heroically determined Benjamin Braddock.  “The Graduate” quickly became a cult favorite and an artistic triumph, garnering multiple Academy Award nominations and it remains one of the top grossing films in history.

The cast includes veterans of L.A. Theatre Works, Heidi Dippold as Mrs. Robinson, Brian Tichnel as Benjamin Braddock, Tom Virtue  as Mr. Braddock and Josh Clark as Mr. Robinson.

Dippold had a recurring role on “The Sopranos” and has had guest appearances on NCIS, “NYPD Blue,” “Alias,” and “Law & Order.” She starred in the film “House” with Michael Madsen and was featured in “Stardom” and the campy-horror film “Mexican Werewolf in Texas.”

Tichnell has recently been seen on “Newsroom,” “Fetching,” and “Maron” and will be featured on the forthcoming “Silicon Valley.”

Clark has appeared in dozens of popular TV shows including; “Modern Family,” “Mad Men,” “Shameless,” “The Mentalist,” “Law & Order,” “24,” and “Heroes.” Film credits include “Big” and “Ragtime,” among others.

Virtue’s numerous TV credits include long runs on Disney’s “Even Stevens,” “The Bonnie Hunt Show,” “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” “Star Trek:Voyager,” as well as dozens of guest appearances on “The Mindy Project,” “The Office,” “NCIS,” “Big Time Rush,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and many more.
