Harry Potter and campus-grown greens have helped UNH Dining win two silver Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards, given annually for the most successful ideas in menus, presentations, special event planning, and new dining concepts.

Given by the National Association of College and University Food Services, the award is named for NACUFS founder Loyal E. Horton. To date, Dining Services has been awarded 27 Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards.

UNH was recognized this year in the “Special Event-Theme Dinner” category for its Harry Potter night, and in the “Retail Sales – Single Concept” class for the UNH Dairy Bar.

“We are very excited to be recognized nationally by our peers for having such an outstanding program. These two awards represent UNH Dining Services commitment to excellence in serving our guests, sustainability and enhancing campus life. I could not be prouder of the accomplishments these highly, competitive awards represent,” said Jon Plodzik, director of UNH Dining Services.

The Harry Potter Night drew more than 4,000 people to Holloway Commons where sections of the dining halls were transformed into locations found in the Harry Potter books. The printed menus were inspired by Marauder's Map, a magical document that reveals all of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Chocolate frogs and wizard-like pops were hand-painted.

The Dairy Bar entry included information about its use of vegetables grown in high tunnels on campus through a partnership with COLSA. The high tunnels, designed for maximum production and efficiency, are located on the university’s agricultural land and are operated by the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station (NHAES).

In September 2012, The Daily Meal, an online foodie publication that reports the latest culinary news and trends around the world, ranked UNH among the 52 best colleges for food in America, in part because of the Dairy Bar’s healthy vegetarian and fat-free offerings.

Also in 2012, UNH Dining won a prestigious Goldie Award from Food Service Director Magazine for its continual promotion of healthy eating.
