Healthy UNH Offers Tips for May Employee Health and Fitness Month

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

UNH is committed to improving the health of its faculty, staff, and student population through the work of Healthy UNH, and to making UNH the healthiest campus community in the country by 2020.

In honor Employee Health and Fitness Month, Healthy UNH offers the following tip:

  1. Take your meeting on-the-go. Rather than sitting in a conference room or meeting for coffee, go for a walk or run. Keep a spare pair of sneakers at your work station and you will always be prepared. Campus Rec provides several options for walking and running routes on their website.
  2. Stop to smell the flowers. Take a break from your computer screen and de-stress with a short break outside. The UNH Tree Walk Podcast can help you learn to appreciate the great outdoors.
  3. Eat locally. The Durham Farmers Market opens June 3.
  4. Get a massage. Did you know Health Services offers massage services here on campus? Massage relieves tension, increase circulation, increases flexibility and promotes overall health.
  5. Rent a bike. Cat Cycles is a program on campus that offers bicycle rentals to faculty, staff, and students.
  6. Take a hike. Or a climb. Or a paddle. Outdoor Adventures at Campus Rec offers outing trips and courses to teach you new skills about the great outdoors. They also rent out equipment.
  7. Erase your stress. Stress Eraser is an educational program that teaches USNH employees how to lower stress levels through biofeedback.
  8. Expand your lunch choices. Get a meal plan! Summer is a great time to learn how to navigate the dining hall. Use Guiding Stars to help you choose healthy items.
  9. Call the EAP. The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a confidential counseling and referral service that can help you and your family deal with life’s challenges.
  10. And don’t forget Walk NH on June 5. Join Healthy UNH, Campus Rec, Health Services, HR, and Dining for UNH’s 5 Annual Walk NH. Register today!
