The Hamel Center for Undergraduate Research and the Discovery Program are pleased to announce a new annual award for undergraduate research. Please read the descriptions below to determine that your nominee meets the criteria. Self nominations are welcome.
Description
The Discovery Award for Outstanding Research is granted to two undergraduate students at the University of New Hampshire who have made compelling achievements in research related to the Discovery Program University Dialogue topic of the current academic year. This award comes with a one time scholarship of $500.00.
Award Criteria
Successful nominations for the 2009 Discovery Award for Outstanding Research will include undergraduate research that advances understanding of poverty and opportunity in the US or internationally and/or potentially contributes to poverty alleviation. Research from all disciplines is eligible and encouraged. Nominated research papers and/or projects should be explicit about their connections to poverty and opportunity and all nominations should include a short abstract/description of research findings that is written for a general audience.
We encourage the following characteristics in a successful proposal:
- Clarity of the research proposal in addressing the topic of the divide between rich and poor;
- Application of an inquiry based or interdisciplinary methodology to the topic;
- Originality of concept or reflects a particular passion or burning question;
- A grounding in sound methodological practices;
- Shows potential for application to contemporary or future knowledge needs in the public sector, business and industry, the NGO world, or the civic sector.
Nomination Process
Nominations will be accepted through April 3, 2009. Providing detailed information for the questions below will ensure your nominee is given full consideration by the Committee of faculty and Discovery Authors from across UNH colleges. This award is announced prior to the Undergraduate Research Conference held each year in April and includes a presentation by the award recipients at the conference.
